Stülper Huk

Highlight • Beach

A Huk is the North German expression for a small, usually elevated peninsula or corner as a coastal feature. This Huk is located exactly where the mouth of the Trave into the Baltic Sea was established in the Middle Ages. From the perspective of that time, the course of the Trave ended at this point in the Pötenitzer Wiek, hence the name of the village "Travemünde".
The elevation is the Hirtenberg. Due to its location, the place must have had great importance as early as the Stone Age, as evidenced by corresponding archaeological finds.
The Huk was first mentioned in writing around 1147/1149. Today, rampart and ditch structures of a former fortification can still be found here. It is assumed that a motte, also called a motte-and-bailey castle, stood there in the High Middle Ages. Incidentally, one has been rebuilt near Lütjenburg.

It's hard to believe, such beautiful nature opens up, and hiking is particularly fun.

The forest path above the Trave is very narrow in parts, but easy to walk on. The view is very nice in winter and spring through the bare trees.

What has almost been forgotten: there was once a combined land and sea airfield on the Priwall and on the Pötenitzer Wiek. It was once called the "Air Cross of the North". But that was back in the mid-1920s.

Incidentally, the Skandinavienkai is the largest port in Lübeck.

October 3, 2022,🕍 Lübeck: Dummersdorfer Ufer
10/3/22 - a feeling like in the Danish South Seas, I think. "Looks like Scotland," says my wife. It will probably be somewhere in between. However, the Trave just before its mouth is not an insider tip. At least not today on German Unity Day.

A beautiful tour along the Dummersdorfer Ufer with a view of the Trave

If the Baltic Sea beaches are too crowded, the Stülper Huk is a wonderful alternative! Wild nature, the blue Trave with many ships, and sometimes almost adventurous paths, what more could you want!
