Behlendorf Village Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The very beautiful Evangelical Lutheran village church in Behlendorf is an early Gothic stone church in Behlendorf. The founding of the single-nave stone church in Behlendorf is not documented. Its origins are dated to the middle of the 13th century. The church tower was built in 1893; previously the church had a wooden bell tower from 1660. The church consists of a nave with two bays and a retracted box choir. The sacristy on the north side is also from the early Gothic period. The porch on the south side of the church was added later. Inside there are rib vaults in the yokes of the nave and in the choir. There is a gallery in the west. Some of the paintings of the church from the time it was built have been preserved.
The baroque altarpiece and the late Renaissance style pulpit were donated to the church in 1635 by Katharina Brosius née Warendorp, the widow of Bernhard Brosius, the Behlendorfer court leaseholder. They bear the coats of arms of both families. The family with their three children is shown on the altarpiece. The first baptismal font made from Gotland limestone has been in the possession of the St. Anne's Museum in Lübeck since the 19th century.
The church windows bear 39 coats of arms in stained glass, mostly the coats of arms of Lübeck councilors from 1603, an indication that Behlendorf belonged to the Hanseatic city as an exclave from 1428 to 1937. There are also pastor pictures and epitaphs in the church. The decorated bell was cast by Wittwerck in Danzig in 1733.

Gravel Path Through the Forest

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Dirt road only recommended in summer, otherwise it will be very difficult to get through the sand with narrow tires.

For commuters on bikes, the bike station is the ideal place to park your beloved bike safely and dry. Simply register with an email, pay online and gain access with a PIN - it really couldn't be easier. The prices are absolutely fair at EUR 1.00 per day or EUR 5.00 per week. 💯% recommended!

There are two replicas of Norwegian Viking ships. The originals are on display in Oslo in the “Vikingskiphuset”. The two ships each offer space for 12 people and are used throughout Europe. Behind minibuses with 9 seats they are transported on trailers to rivers and lakes, in order to then experience the old routes and river landscapes on the "footsteps of the Vikings" and to explore them as they did 1000 years ago.
