Bird Observation Hide Kronenloch

Highlight • Structure

A very nice vantage point in the Meldorfer Hafen. The soil of the nature reserve “Kronenloch” initially consisted largely of vegetation-free mudflats. Only in the northeastern area, the former goat island, were there salt marshes before the dike was dyed. For the first time, attempts have now been made to preserve and design a saltwater biotope in a recently diked Koog. This concept was unique at the time on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein. Water from the North Sea is admitted via the Meldorfer Hafen, which is distributed around the island by means of a circulating channel using the former tideways and then returned via the external mile and the Miele reservoir. As a consequence, beach crabs and lugworms can still be found in the area today.

Helmsand Causeway

Highlight • Bridge

The former reverberant island of Helmsand has been connected to the mainland since 1935 by a 3.5 kilometer long stone dam. The embankment of the reservoir ooze shortened the dam to 1.5 kilometers. The dam can be entered all year round. Helmsand itself is closed during the breeding season from April to August.

Elpersbüttel Green Beach

Highlight • Beach

The Elpersbüttel bathing area is located south of the Alter Meldorfer Hafen and is also referred to as a "lido" in a display case at the crossover between the parking lot. The parking lot is from 1.5.-30.9. charges apply. During this time, the public toilets and the kiosk should also be open and (a few) beach chairs should be rented out. During the main holiday season, a DLRG station should ensure safety here. Now - in November - there was of course ... nothing 😊 You can get to the green beach from the parking lot either via two flights of stairs or an asphalt driveway - barrier-free. It is probably much quieter than on other beaches in Dithmarschen, even in the high season.

May 31, 2025,Von der Badestelle Elpersbüttel zur Hallig Helmsand, zurück am NSG Kronenloch entlang
A beautiful hike, far from the tourist crowds. I only encountered a few cyclists and a lot of sheep. Flowers bloom everywhere along the trail.

Showing Translation

Helmsand as a former Hallig is worth a visit. With rising tide and a lot of wind with stormy gusts, we did this hike.
However, the resting and breeding area is closed from April to July.
