Rocamadour — Medieval Village

Highlight • Historical Site

Rocamadour is situated on three levels. Each one is worth seeing and the whole of the place is just stunning. In the lower level you wander through the village, whose medieval houses nestle on the steep slopes above the gorge of the Alzou river. From there you can climb the Grand Staircase to the 12th-century Holy City (Sanctuaire). And at the top of the mountain, the third level, is a 14th-century castle. Great! Rocamadour is still a famous place of pilgrimage and also gave its name to a small goat cheese.

The church is architecturally very impressive as it is built into a rock face. It also has a black Madonna as well as some other interesting areas. The inner courtyard and the view up to the castle are excellent, as is the view of the village and the valley.

From the hamlet of l'Hospitalet, starts the path, called the "Holy Way", which pilgrims take to reach the sanctuary: it goes down into the Alzou valley to the lower town, where the foot of the the staircase of two hundred and sixteen steps which leads to the sanctuary. In the Middle Ages, pilgrims climbed it on their knees. The last …

A day trip through the old town of Rocamandour. The town is full of people, but still worth a look. Unfortunately, the last part of the route is missing.

Today I went as a tourist by bus from Figeac to Rocamadour, a much-visited pilgrimage site. The bus runs in June and September on weekends, in July and August daily, and stops at the castle. I was the only passenger. Rocamadour is divided into 3 levels. The castle is at the very top. The view from there is great, but …

Rocamadour is a very interesting, historic town on a steep slope with many beautiful shops and restaurants. Rocamadour is also a place of pilgrimage for the Roman Catholic Church and accordingly attracts many pilgrims. The name comes from Saint Amadour, a hermit who found refuge here at the foot of a steep rock.

What a wonderful place! The Black Madonna on the altar of the Chapelle Notre Dame and its miraculous bell survived both the Hundred Years' War and the Huguenot Wars. It stands in the ancient pilgrimage site of Rocamandour, high above the Alzou Valley. The site appears to have been hewn directly from the steep limestone cliff. From the village on …

Rocamdour can truly only be described as "picturesque." No other description is appropriate. The "vertical village" is built on the rocky slope in successive tiers. At the bottom is the village, on the second tier is the so-called sanctuary with eight churches, and at the very top is the castle.
