Dorchester to Weymouth Cycleway (National Cycle Route 26)

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Easier as a long shallow climb out of Dorchester. From Weymouth theres a few nasty upticks which can catch the unwary out.

Sculpture by the Lakes

Highlight • Monument

Best avoided if you are looking for a sandwich or light bite lunch, best to carry on to the Walled Garden 2 miles away at Moreton, lovely freshly prepared sandwiches etc and very friendly helpful staff.
The cafe is highly pretentious and was a complete waste of time serving only four or five main meals ~£12 per meal with no indication of accompaniments or drinks menu.
If you want sandwiches or something light it is pre-made pre-packed from a takeaway pantry and there is nowhere to sit down to eat them.
The bike racks are useless wheelbending hoops , not even bolted down and hence failing my insurance requirements for an ebike to lock to an immovable object.
I am sure the sculptures are stunning unfortunately we were so put off we decided against viewing or returning at a later date.

St Nicholas' Church

Highlight • Historical Site

This church was rebuilt using its medieval foundations in the late 18th century. Lawrence of Arabia is buried in the churchyard.

Cakes are served on the cart that was used to carry T E Lawrence's (aka Lawrence of Arabia) coffin to his final resting place - just a few metres down the road! On the route here you might even ride over the exact spot where he crashed on his Brough Superior Limited motorbike (the exact location remains a mystery but it's reportedly somewhere near Pallington Farm). Some might think he's a fictional character due to all the films made about his life but T E Lawrence was actually a British Intelligence Officer born in Wales but resident in Dorset, who fought alongside Arab guerrilla forces in the Middle East during the First World War. He later worked as an advisor to Winston Churchill and then for the RAF.

Woodsford Castle

Highlight • Castle

This is the surviving part of a 14th-century castle, a rambling wing of great interest and charm, deep in Hardy country just outside Dorchester. Its roof has one of the largest expanses of thatch in the county. Just one side of the quadrangular castle, built in 1370 and probably added to an existing group of buildings, remains today.

View of Weymouth and Dorchester

Highlight • Cycleway

Be careful as it is unpaved. Passable on a road bike, and offers a good alternative to busy roads.
