Castle Hill Estate

Highlight • Monument

Castle Hill was built in 1730 by the Fortescue family and reconstructed following a large fire in 1934. It was caused by the boiler for the newly installed central heating and tragically killed both the housekeeper and a maid.

On top of the hill behind the house is Sham Castle.

The family still live on the estate which is now also used as a wedding and conference venue and the gardens are open to the public. For more information visit their website castlehilldevon.co.uk

South Molton Market Square

Highlight • Settlement

South Molton is a market town centred round a market square. It was a major part of the UK's wool trade and markets still thrive twice a week, although no longer just the domain of wool.

There are plenty of cafes in South Molton for mid-ride nourishment

Instow Station on the Tarka Trail

Highlight • Cycleway

Flat and easy to ride trail, we picked it up in Barnstaple and followed to Bideford. I am sure there are lovely views across the Estuary however we didn't get to enjoy them as there was a low sea mist the day we rode! Some nice little cafe stops along the way at old stations.

River Taw

Highlight • River

Running from Dartmoor into the Atlantic Sea, the River Taw is a wild and beautiful river. Home to various fish species such as recreational trout and sea trout, the area is popular with anglers. The river is easy to explore by bike thanks to the Tarka Trail bike path. It carves 45 miles (72 km) through agricultural landscapes, valleys and woodland.
