St Mary's Church, Embsay

Highlight • Religious Site

This church was built in 1853 in the early English gothic style. It was built mainly for mill workers and the poor of the parish: at that time, there were six cotton spinning mills in Eastby and Embsay around here.

Inside, spot the memorial stained-glass window, to Reverend Henry Cooper (by Baptiste Capronnier), which is rather striking. Cooper was the church's first incumbent, and died in 1860.

Barden Moor Estate Track

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Long section (5 miles/ 7.6km) of isolated estate track over Barden Moor with great views and an exciting descent to Rhylstone.

Upper Barden Reservoir

Highlight • Structure

This reservoir, one of the two Barden reservoirs in the area, was opened in 1882, and supplies water to Bradford. A classic British moorland reservoir, it's easy to walk around and enjoy the views. On its east side, there is a dam with a wide flat track, but all the paths and footways around the reservoir will be easy to for most walkers. Enjoy!

Lower Barden Reservoir

Highlight • Structure

Fabulous views from this stop where Far Long Gill runs down into the reservoir. This one is one of the two reservoirs built near Bolton Abbey in the 19th century. The Lower Barden one here is an impressively large one, 640m in length and 28m in depth! (depending on the rainfall, I suspect)

Barden Road Climb

Highlight • Viewpoint

Barden Road winds through moody moorlands as it climbs to 984 feet (300 metres). The view over distant hills, rocky outcrops and layered fields is simply stunning. Look out for the glistening waters of Lower Barden Reservoir on the horizon as you descend down Black Hill. The climb up isn't easy, but the views will quickly make you forget your aching muscles!
