Big Bone Lick State Park

Highlight • Natural Monument

Big Bone Lick State Park is a great place to stop and see what the area would have looked like in prehistoric times. Mammoths once roamed this region of northern Kentucky, and fossilized remains have been found all over the Big Bone Lick area. You can see these reconstructed giants in various parts of the park, and the visitors center will give you even more information about these ancient creatures.

The park is also home to a herd of wild bison. You are able to see them from a viewing platform as they graze on the meadows and roam the forests.

Rabbit Hash Historic District

Highlight • Historical Site

Rabbit Hash is a small town on the banks of the Ohio River. Riding into the town is like taking a step back in history. The buildings in the town are all from the 1800s, and have been perfectly preserved. The general store sells everything you could need for a great lunch, and there are picnic areas right next to the river.

The town is also famous for having animals as their mayors and other political figures. The current mayor (as of April 2023) is a French Bulldog named Wilbur Beast. You can often see the political canines of the town wandering the streets and asking for pets in the store.
