Eagle Monument on the Mühlberg

Highlight • Monument

The imposing monument with the stone inscription "Gott mit uns" under the feet of the one-headed imperial eagle at the top is made of coarse porphyry blocks. This memorial was built in 1914 by a replacement battalion for the fallen of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. The eagle looks west to the "evil archenemy".

On the pillar the admonition: "To honor the fallen, to teach the living".

This conflict was the birth of the German Empire, which was symbolically proclaimed in 1871 in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. With the founding of the empire, the old dream of a unified nation state came true for many; it permanently changed the balance of power on the European continent.

Wöllstein Fairy Tale Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The idea for the Wöllsteiner Märchenweg, incidentally, comes from former theatre director Margot Haubs: The Wöllstein theatre group once performed the stories surrounding the six figures with great passion. With the hiking trail, they wanted to create something lasting and donated four figures. In 2009 and 2011, another sculpture was added each year; also financed by donations – including from the St. Franziskus scout settlement.

The aluminium sculptures all stand on concrete bases. On them are panels that tell visitors to the Märchenweg more about the respective figure and its story. I particularly like this, because these texts encourage parents or grandparents to re-read the timelessly beautiful stories to their (grand)children.

The figures were designed by Stefanie Neumann.

It was gray and hazy, but there's a lot to see, and it's a high-altitude tour, so it's hilly😄 and you should be sure-footed
