Forth Bridge

Highlight • Monument

This mighty railway bridge across the Firth of Forth is a true emblem of Scotland. When completed in 1890, it had the world’s longest span at 1,775 feet (541 m). It remains one of the greatest cantilever trussed bridges in the world and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Forth Bridge was designed by engineers Sir John Fowler and Sir Benjamin Baker.

Falkirk Wheel

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Falkirk Wheel is the only rotating boat lift in the world. This feat of engineering stands at 115 feet (35 m) tall and, using the power of eight domestic kettles, transfers boats 79 feet (24 m) through the air between the Forth & Clyde Canal and the Union Canal. Boats must then ascend another 36 feet (11 m) through a pair of locks between the top of the wheel and the Union Canal. There is a visitor centre here with facilities and information on the Wheel.

John Muir Way at Blackness

Highlight • Trail

This trail past Blackness forms part of the John Muir Way (Helensburgh to Dunbar; johnmuirway.org/route) and the National Cycle Route 76 (Berwick Upon Tweed to Kirkaldy - sustrans.org.uk/find-a-route-on-the-national-cycle-network/route-76/). The surface is light gravel so will be fine for most bike types except perhaps racing road bikes in the winter where it might get a bit slippery when wet and muddy.
