Zittau Town Hall

Highlight • Monument

After Zittau had been almost completely destroyed in the Seven Years War by the Austrian army, the citizens began in the late 18th century with the reconstruction. Construction of the New Town Hall began in 1840. Just five years later, the impressive building, which was based on building plans by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, was completed and opened.

Zittau Meat Market

Highlight • Historical Site

In the Middle Ages, the Zittau Fleischbänke were a trading center for the butchers' guild, centrally located near the market. The neoclassical arcade connected three shopping streets in the city.
When I was a child, the weekly market was also held there.
After the fall of communism, decay and vandalism continued and the passage to Böhmische Straße had to be closed.
Today, with a lot of effort and on the initiative of Zittau traders, restaurateurs and business owners, the small market stalls are maintained as best as possible and are open to various events in the city.
I have the schema on www. "Stolen".

Crocus Meadow at the Old Plane Tree

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Zittauer plane tree, 275 years old, trunk circumference 6.31 m, 28 m high, (data from 2018).
Especially worth a visit for the crocus blossom. Then thousands of crocuses bloom around the tree. A great sight.

Church of the Holy Cross, Zittau
Museum Church of the Holy Cross
In the Museum Church of the Holy Cross, the Great Zittau Lenten Veil from 1472 is on display in the largest museum display case in the world (Guinness Book of Records). Of the few museums worldwide that own a Lenten veil, only here can it be shown in its original function of covering the altar. The 8.20 m high and 6.80 m wide cloth tells the biblical story from the creation of the world to the Last Judgement in 90 pictures. Along with the Bayeux Tapestry, it is one of the most impressive textile works of art in Western tradition. Of the total of 18 Lenten veils of this type, it is the only one that has survived in Germany. The more than 600-year-old burial church, with its precious early Baroque furnishings, numerous graves and epitaphs, and the museum cemetery, also offers a unique testimony to bourgeois-urban sepulchral culture.

Zittau Municipal Pool

Highlight • Rest Area

A real eye-catcher is the old city pool. The pretty building shines in new splendor. Which city in Germany can still have a historic old town bath?

June 7, 2023,Runde um den Grünen Ring
A few steps were still missing and so I decided to do a lap around the Green Ring.
First I visited the new school building site...it's slowly starting.

The old cemetery at the Weberkirche was open, so I did a little sightseeing round until I was thrown out... we're closing now.
It was interesting, but I would have needed some …
