Until a few years ago, this canyon was completely flooded, so that the characteristic basalt columns were below the water surface of the glacial river Jökla. But a large dam project cut almost all tributaries of the 150-long Jökla. The once wild and untamed glacial river, brownish from the entrained sediments, turned into a clear and leisurely river. The bluish color of the Jökla forms a nice contrast to the partially reddish shimmering basalt columns that now flank it. Although the Stuðlagil Canyon still does not have too many visitors, photography enthusiasts in particular cannot get enough of this special backdrop.
