View of Bruttig

Highlight • Viewpoint

Definitely stop here. The small climb is worth it. An amazing view of the Moselle valley. If you want, you can also continue on the Panohüttentrail as an uphill. It's tough, but doable.

Moselhöhenweg Scenic Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

The viewpoint on the Moselhöhenweg near Bruttig-Fankel offers a fantastic panoramic view of the characteristic loops of the Moselle river and the steep wine terraces of the Moselkrampen. A trip in spring or summer is particularly worthwhile when the slopes shine in the fresh green of the budding vines and the paths invite you to hike. Along the routes, you can experience the region's traditional wine culture up close before cozy "Straußwirtschaften" (seasonal wine taverns) in the valley invite you to stop for local specialties.

Church of the Assumption of Mary, Fankel

Highlight • Religious Site

Catholic Church of the Assumption of Mary, Fankel, Brunnenstrasse, Bruttig-Fankel
The present-day Church of the Assumption of Mary is located directly in the center of Fankel, at the intersection of Brunnenstrasse and Rathausstrasse. It stands on the site of an earlier Romanesque chapel, presumably built by the end of the 13th century. Only the five-story tower remains today, while the nave fell victim to an earthquake in the mid-14th century. Construction of the new nave began around 1385, but was not completed until shortly before the mid-15th century with the completion of the vault. Around the same time, the new choir with its antechamber (architecturally raised bay in front of the choir) and sacristy were built.
Since the 16th century, there is evidence of a Marian patronage for the parish of Fankel, which was celebrated on the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. The chapel was previously dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian, who were still mentioned as secondary patron saints in the 17th century. The two saints are also depicted on one of the keystones of the nave. Since the 19th century, the church has also been dedicated to Saint Sebastian. The roof trusses were renewed and the vaults repaired in the early 1930s. The nave's Baroque wall paintings were restored in 1955.

The current church building is a plastered rubble stone structure with red sandstone window and door jambs. The five-story bell tower, dating from the Romanesque period, adjoins the nave on the south side. The sacristy is located in the resulting angle between the tower and the chapel. The tower is also made of plastered rubble stone and features a lunetted barrel vault on the ground floor and a barrel vault on the first floor. Four biforia windows (windows divided into two smaller openings by a central support) on the fifth floor serve as sound openings. The current eight-sided, pointed steeple with slate roof dates from the 15th century and replaced the original pyramidal roof.
The single-nave church hall is characterized by a three-bay star vault resting on profiled wall brackets. One of the brackets on the tower side is designed as a figure of a young stonemason with a cap and long curls. The choir has a cross vault followed by a three-sided chancel end. The choir is separated from the nave by a pointed, hollow-chambered triumphal arch. The two-part tracery windows from the 15th century alternately feature two trefoils (tracery ornament consisting of three circular arcs inscribed within a circle), on which rest a quatrefoil, a heart-shaped trefoil, or a standing quatrefoil. Of particular note among the church's furnishings are the late Gothic sacrament shrine and the three altars dating from between 1750 and 1760.

Medieval timber-framed houses in Fankel

Highlight • Historical Site

"... The town centers of the Moselle villages offer a multitude of well-preserved and restored historical buildings and houses. In Fankel, for example, you can find the medieval ensemble in Rathausstrasse and Brunnenstrasse, which consists of the Catholic branch church, the church gate, the council and Playhouse, the Engelporter Hofhaus, the Stetziges courtyard house, the Christopherushaus and several floating gable and stair-gable houses. Together with the floating gable houses in Bruttig, Bruttig - Fankel forms the center of medieval floating gables in Germany. ... "

Fankel Town Hall

Highlight • Monument

Fankel, the former tithe house converted into the town hall
The centers of both districts lie on a gently sloping slope. Fankel, the smaller district of the twin town with 400 inhabitants, is particularly pleasing to the eye with its half-timbered houses with small gables and bay windows in its winding alleys. Along Brunnenstrasse and the former tithe house converted into the town hall, it forms a cohesive late Gothic ensemble. The medieval church building is colorfully decorated in the Rococo style.
