Teufelsschlucht (Schwarzachtal)

Highlight • Gorge

Currently closed due to danger to life. This could last for several years because safety measures are necessary after tree and rockfalls.

Especially now in winter, I can only agree – it was sometimes extremely dangerous...

The Teufelskirche is a gorge in the Rhät Sandstone and an adventure playground in a mystical world. The path through the gorge leads in some places over wooden bridges or stone blocks to make any progress. Sometimes you sink to the ankles in the mud, waterproof footwear is advisable and good sure-footedness is necessary. At the end of the gorge, a small waterfall flows down the layers of sandstone. At the waterfall, stairs lead into the gorge and an information board has been installed. At the foot of the rock formations at the waterfall, some tunnels up to 70 meters long testify to attempts to mine lignite and silver.

The Teufelshöhle is located on the western slope of the Pfaffental gorge near Prackenfels. A "metal ladder" leads to the cave itself, the path around the cave is slippery when wet, good shoes are required and caution is required. The Teufelshöhle is an artificially created Räthsandhöhle, the cave consists of a single large room with 56 meters x 52 meters. Its height is about 4.5 meters. Entering the cave is prohibited due to the risk of collapse.

Auer's Beer Cellar

Highlight • Historical Site

The Auer'sche Keller is a former beer cellar of a former local brewery (Altdorfer Brauhaus). It was formerly used as the taproom of the nearby lion pit. The branched cellar was driven into the castle sandstone around 1846. It is privately owned. The Auer'sche Bierkeller is located on the way near the Löwengrube and has lost none of its old charm. Today it is sometimes used for art exhibitions. Only the front of the old half-timbered house can be seen from the building. The rest of the building protrudes into the hillside and is protected from the weather and strangers.

Prethalm Mill (Historic Mill)

Highlight • Historical Site

The mill was first mentioned in documents in 1360 and was completely destroyed in the Thirty Years' War in 1635. The mill was rebuilt in 1643 and has since served as a flour and sawmill. When industrialization began, the mill was converted to produce electricity to maintain an energy-intensive copper foil factory. Today the mill feeds its green electricity directly into the grid.

Nice round. Mostly on forest paths. Ideal in the current warm temperatures. Unfortunately, no refreshment stops. But on the other hand, collected endless blackberries.

No devil discovered in the cave but huge cave with small stalactites. After the lion's den you come to the rock cellar and it's really huge with several corridors.

🚶‍♀️ A partially familiar loop along the dune hiking trail in the Schwarzach Valley, with a few caves.

Nice, a bit of an adventure, but we got a bit lost at the end.

But it's perfect for a relaxing evening 🔦🚶‍♀️

Of course we started where the goal was. The first part is unfortunately not recorded.

The gorge is pretty muddy. The mud runs into the shoes from above 😊😊

A wonderful autumn hike. You need sturdy shoes and you shouldn't be afraid to get dirty, as it is quite muddy in the gorge. Otherwise it's nice to go.

After leaving our holiday resort of Pottenstein in the heart of Franconian Switzerland, we made a hiking stop near Nuremberg-Altdorf.
A great tour with caves, rock cellars, gorge with Teufelskirche.
The pests 🦟 who pounced bloodthirsty on the exposed extremities were also part of the party. The Bister are also Autan resistant.
We didn't eat snacks until we came out …

Beautiful hike along the Schwarzach to the Löwengrube and the Felsenkeller (don't forget your flashlight 😉). Then to the Teufelshöhle (not accessible) before heading back to the car park. Unfortunately, the Teufelsschlucht is currently not accessible (danger to life due to falling trees and landslides caused by rainfall). Alternatively, you can walk along the top of the trail 4 and …
