Davitskreuz

Highlight • Monument

>

Description:

Baroque shaft cross at Heidberg. At an altitude of 531.0 meters above sea level.

"... The following has been handed down about the creation of our cultural monument "Davitskreuz" and also recorded in writing in the local yearbook Büscheich from 1925 by the then teacher Diehl: It was on All Souls' Day in the year 1764. It was generally a strict custom to go to Gerolstein in the morning of that day to go to church and to pray for the deceased. Under no circumstances was it allowed to work on this day. Nevertheless, a man from Büscheich, called Davit, sinned against this unwritten commandment. While the devout worshipers went to church in Gerolstein, he hitched his oxen to drive to the forge in Pelm. When he came to the place where the Davitskreuz stands today in the sunken road, the oxen suddenly stopped and could not be moved from the spot. He had no choice but to to turn and go home. As atonement for his crime he had the cross erected. ..."

Büsch Chapel – Mary of the Clear Spring

Highlight • Religious Site

The bush chapel in the Gerolsteiner Stadtwald is made of red Kylltal sandstone and is consecrated as a pilgrimage chapel of Maria zum Klarbronnen. Visitors have the opportunity to ring the bell of the church tower. Inside the building there is a life-size golden figure of Mary, which is holding the dying Jesus in her arms. It is framed by flower arrangements and a candlestick.

Heiligenstein

Highlight • Natural Monument

These beautiful rock formations directly above Gerolstein are not as spectacular and well-known as the dolomite rocks on the other side of the Kylltal. But they are definitely worth seeing.

Burgblick Shelter (Castle View Shelter)

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The short detour to the refuge is definitely worth it. There is also a relaxation bench there. Great view of Gerolstein and the castle.

Heiligenstein rock formations

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Heiligenstein is a group of limestone and dolomite rocks southeast of Gerolstein. The crevices and pear-shaped cavities near the rocks are typical of a karst landscape. The cavities were able to form because components of the rock were dissolved by water and environmental influences.
