Martinstor (Lindau Gate), Wangen im Allgäu

Highlight • Monument

The five-story Martinstor, also known as the Lindau Gate, built of argentinian pebbles and bricks, is one of the three remaining city gates of Wangen im Allgäu, along with the Frauentor and the Pfaffentor at the town hall. The other two were demolished in the 19th century.

THE HISTORICAL ERBA IN FRESH GLORY
Idyllic living and working where huge machines used to rattle: This will soon be possible at the ERBA industrial monument. This is where ultra-modern apartments for singles, couples and families as well as innovative commercial and event spaces are being built. As part of the federal program National Urban Development Projects, the old chimney was renovated in 2018 and is now visible from afar as a landmark.

Wangen Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

Observation tower / observation platform made of wood (22 meters high)
"The world's first walkable tower in sustainable wood construction"
The tower is 22 meters high. Via a steel staircase with 113 steps. The cost of the observation tower is around 2.2 million euros.
The tower consists of a wooden structure made of 12 centimeter thin, curved panels. These are created by gluing moist wooden slats together. The drying process causes the panels to warp into the intended shape.
The tower design is based on two principles that are taken from biology: Firstly, nature has found ways to use the shrinkage of wood for a controlled shape-changing process. A good example of this is spruce cones, whose wooden scales have been "programmed" by nature so that they change shape when they dry out and open on their own. A similar self-forming process leads to the complex shape of the components of our tower.
Secondly, nature also shows how more shape requires less material. The shape of the tower is not an end in itself, but rather enables a very slim, resource-saving and efficient wooden construction. It is the world's first walkable tower to be built using this innovative and sustainable wooden construction method. Ultimately, the tower is visible from afar and is therefore not only an attraction and landmark, but also an expression of how we can design nature and architecture in a mutually compatible way in the future.

A visit to the State Garden Show in Wangen was on my wish list. Today the weather wasn't ideal, but the number of visitors was limited.
The flower beds, which imitate fabric patterns, are colorful and original. And there are also many other references to Wangen's textile industry history.
Themed gardens, playgrounds and of course the floristry exhibition offer plenty …

Lucky with the weather for a nice Sunday/Monday trip to the LGS in Wangen. A lot has been done for this LGS in the last 10 years. Above all, a completely new district has been created and the Argen has been renaturalized next to it, with 5 new bridges built and 5 old bridges renovated. A lot that remains and …

The State Garden Show in Wangen im Allgäu is taking place until October 6th, 2024. It was a very nice afternoon and there was a lot to see.
