Fuhne River

Highlight • River

The Fuhne has no source, but a crest fed by surface and seepage water from a wetland. The current riverbed therefore has a branching called a bifurcation. East of Zehbitz, its western part flows into the Saale, which it reaches in the Dröbel district of the town of Bernburg (Saale). The eastern part flows into the Spittelwasser, a tributary of the Mulde, in Jeßnitz. The part that drains into the Mulde did not arise naturally, but dates back to drainage measures in the swampy lowlands towards the end of the 16th century, when newly created ditches such as the Landgraben were connected to the water in such a way that the central section of the new ditch had a gradient in both directions.[3] The swampy lowland between the Mulde and Saale, where the Fuhne lies, is part of a glacial channel that used to drain exclusively to the west and carried water from the Mulde area towards the Elbe.[4] This lowland was reactivated by the drainage.

The Mulde and Saale are direct tributaries of the Elbe. Until the 1990s, the eastern part of the Fuhne was considered polluted due to discharges of industrial wastewater.

The Fuhne is 55 km long, of which the western part is about 42.9 km and the eastern part 12.15 km. With a few exceptions, the course of the river in the southernmost part includes the border between the then Duchy of Anhalt and the former Prussian province of Saxony. The river also demarcates the dialect area of the Anhalt dialect from the surrounding areas, sometimes sharply and clearly.

Theurer Christian Monument

Highlight • Monument

The Theure Christian is a roadside monument. It is considered the oldest road monument in Saxony-Anhalt. It is located on the old connecting road between Radegast, a district of the city of Südliches Anhalt and Zörbig in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, district of Anhalt-Bitterfeld, on the former state border between the Duchy of Saxony-Merseburg and later the Electorate of Saxony and the Principality of Anhalt- Dessau, later the Duchy of Anhalt. Until June 30, 2007, this was also the border of the districts of Bitterfeld and Köthen, which were merged in Saxony-Anhalt as a result of the second district reform.

The monument was erected in the baroque architectural style in 1688 to commemorate the fortification of the dam through the Fuhne lowlands between Radegast and Zörbig. It consists of a 5 m high substructure with a square base, each side of which is around 2 m long. It consists of a quarry stone foundation, a sandstone base and a shaft made of plastered bricks and a sandstone cornice. The tower, which is around 4 m high up to the top of the ball, is made of red sandstone and is divided into a pedestal, a pyramid and finally a large ball. The monument has little figurative decoration, but has the lavish decorations on the inscriptions typical of the Baroque era.

The Fuhnedamm fortified a previously swampy section of the trade route from Magdeburg to Leipzig. It was mentioned for the first time on October 21, 1475, but did not withstand the stress in the long term. Repairs and fortifications were probably not carried out for centuries because three states bordered each other - Anhalt-Köthen, Anhalt-Dessau and Electoral Saxony - which apparently made no attempt to agree on how the work should be carried out.

It was only Duke Christian I of Electoral Saxony-Merseburg who decided to renew the Fuhnedamm, although no obstacles were put in his way from the Anhalt side. The dam was finally fortified between 1683 and 1685. The roadside monument was built three years later in honor of Duke Christian.

Five Brothers Church Wadendorf

Highlight • Religious Site

The church in Wadendorf was built in 1735. Its history is linked to its affiliation with Anhalt-Dessau. When the five sons of Prince Leopold and his wife Anna Luise returned unharmed from Emperor Charles VI of Austria's campaign against France under Louis XV, the princely house had churches built in several small towns. This is how Wadendorf got its church in 1735.

It was dedicated to the prince's five sons and was therefore given the name "Five Brothers Church". In 1828 it had to be demolished because it was in a state of disrepair. The church that still stands there today was built in its place.

All that remains of the actual "Five Brothers Church" is the bell, which was cast in Leipzig by Martin Heintze in 1735. Even the cross and the spire are new.

In 1986 the people of Wadendorf began to renovate their church. Source stadt-zoerbig.de/Stadtleben/B%C3%BCrgerservice/Kirchen/index.php?object=tx%7C3940.5.1&ModID=7&FID=3940.21637.1&NavID=3940.132&La=1
