Mengeringhausen Water Castle

The Mengeringhausen water castle was founded in the 13th century by the Counts of Waldeck and in 1382 for the first time with Count Henry VI. von Waldeck and his wife Elisabeth, daughter of the Counts of Ravensburg and Berg, mentioned as residents. From 1696 to 1728, the castle was the seat of the Waldeck Land Chancellery, whose authorities then moved to the newly created residence Arolsen.

In the later years, the castle experienced many changes of ownership. The agriculture was separated from the castle. Twice, in 1929 and 1960, the castle suffered severe damage from fires. It was rebuilt with the help of historic preservation.
