Big Curve (Taunus)

Highlight • Parking

There is also a parking lot, a bus stop at the Applause curve and this curve is very popular with motorcyclists 😄

Sandplacken Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

There is currently only one place to stop for refreshments here - the Sandplacken restaurant. The “Tannenheim” opposite has been closed for about a year.
The Romanian-influenced cuisine of the Sandplacken restaurant is not for everyone... 😉

Should be feasible for everyone, regardless of the condition. The streets are clean and the traffic is very limited, even on weekends. Absolutely great to drive.

At this point you currently (=SEP23) have the best possible view of the city (when the trees grow, this will soon change).

It's a shame that from the west of the city you can only see the Messeturm.

From both driveways, this is the best way to look over your shoulder.

And by the way: be careful when you potentially stop. There is nothing to stop at this point. And the motorcyclists in particular race past extremely quickly - because of the straight just before the summit. It doesn't help much to take precautions like having lights on. I always have my front AND rear lights on at dawn or dusk anyway (Garmin Varia radar is really nerve-racking when the motorbikes come speeding towards me), because in the dark forest passages with the low, blinding sun, even as a driver I find it difficult to see the fast cyclists. So choose all the options that are still just about possible.

But in the morning, when everything is still quite relaxed (there are actually no people up there, while in the evening it is packed), it is a real reward that you can't get from the summit (except from the paid visitor platform, which has semi-optimal opening times and I would hardly leave my expensive bike).

So: the (shoulder) glance is worth its weight in gold. Even on the Altkönig in front of you there is no such clear view.

Have fun and cheers!

Now it's almost done. After having climbed the steepest section. It goes up here again, short and crisp, to the summit plateau.
A detour here is always worthwhile. It is, after all, our highest peak in the region. Be attentive on the descent. There are a few cracks and small holes in the asphalt and especially on weekends there is a lot of traffic ☝️

Großer Feldberg Summit

Highlight • Summit

The Große Feldberg is not only the highest peak of the Taunus, but of the entire Rhenish Slate Mountains. The information about its exact height varies between 879 and 881 meters. The summit is extremely popular with day trippers from the Rhine-Main plain. Not only motorcyclists, racing cyclists and mountain bikers meet here on weekends, but also many motorists. It can get really crowded at peak times. Fortunately, the summit plateau is quite large. In addition to the television tower and transmission mast of the Hessian Broadcasting Corporation, there is a restaurant, two kiosks, a hiking home with an observation tower and a falconry. The most beautiful view is from the Brunhildis rock on the northern edge of the plateau. Various hiking trails lead over the summit. After all, the Taunus Club was founded up here and even Goethe liked to hike in the Taunus. There are plenty of trails for mountain bikers, including the official flow trail over the Fuchstanz to Hohemark. Racing cyclists particularly appreciate the twelve-kilometer ascent from Oberursel because of its length. The road from Schmitten is less busy, but also offers fewer vertical meters in one go. The Feldberg is by far not the most beautiful peak in the Taunus, but is definitely part of a tour in the Taunus because of its height and easy accessibility.

Ascent to Großer Feldberg from Oberursel

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

A mountain stage par excellence! Allez! Allez! Allez! I'm getting faster each time I climb the summit. It's best not to go full throttle at the beginning. The worst part comes at the end... Drinks and something to eat await the finishers at the top!

⚠️ A little tip: Pack a light windbreaker. It can get quite cold on the descent. And be sure to watch out for cars pulling out of parking spaces.
