Saint Nicholas

Highlight • Religious Site

St. Nikolai in Quern
Modeled after Sörup and Munkbrarup, it was begun around 1200 as a granite ashlar building. However, this elaborate construction method did not get beyond the beautifully profiled base; then only the corners were made of ashlar and the wall surfaces were built up with fieldstones. The original church consisted of a box choir and a relatively short nave, the north side of which still shows three small round-arched windows and - adjoining to the west - a walled-up portal. The arches of these openings are already made of bricks. As early as the second quarter of the 13th century, the church began to be extended to the west with a new portal axis and two window axes in fieldstones. The northern of the two younger portals is still late Romanesque with a round arch and a stepped framing of continuous bands of round shaped bricks. The early Gothic south portal, created after 1250, in the porch renewed in 1909, is more progressive and elaborate. In its frame, built alternately of glazed and natural red bricks, stand two pairs of slender columns with shaped brick capitals.

St. Vincentius Church Husby

Highlight • Religious Site

The construction of the Husbyharde central church began before 1200 with the construction of a chapel, the later choir with an apse, on the edge of Thingplatz. There may even have been a previous wooden building. The stone church was dedicated to Saint Vincentius. It was built from carefully hewn granite blocks. The wider nave, also made of granite blocks, was added around 1200. The simple round arched portals at the south and north entrance as well as reliefs of snakes, dragons and wolves on the north side are still preserved from this time. In 1599 lightning destroyed the roof structure.
