Gorleben was mentioned for the first time in 1360 by a document from the rulership of Dannenberg (Elbe). The name “Gorleben” is probably derived from “Goor” (Schlick; Slavic Gor but “mountain”) and “Leben” (heritage). At the time it was first mentioned, there was a castle in the village. In 1426 it was sold to the von Bülow gentlemen, and an upper and a lower castle were mentioned. After being mentioned again in 1449, it no longer appears in historical records.
