Elbe Beach with Picnic Area

Highlight • Beach

Since the Elbe makes an arc here, a beautiful, relatively large sandy beach has formed here. The Elbe beach is right next to the Elbe Cycle Path, which runs along the Elbe dyke. A very nice place for a break during a bike ride or hike on the Elberadweg. At the top of the dike there is a small shelter with a table and two benches. Opposite, on the Lower Saxony side of the Elbe, lies the Gorleben bank of the Elbe.
It's also a wonderful place to take photos, especially with beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

Junction 4 (Elbe Dike, Wootz)

Highlight • Cycleway

“Node 4” is located on the Elbe dike near Wootz, at the former Wootz-Gorleben ferry terminal. There is a small shelter on the dike and there is a very beautiful and relatively large sandy beach on the banks of the Elbe (except when there is high tide).

Gorleben was mentioned for the first time in 1360 by a document from the rulership of Dannenberg (Elbe). The name “Gorleben” is probably derived from “Goor” (Schlick; Slavic Gor but “mountain”) and “Leben” (heritage). At the time it was first mentioned, there was a castle in the village. In 1426 it was sold to the von Bülow gentlemen, and an upper and a lower castle were mentioned. After being mentioned again in 1449, it no longer appears in historical records. Part of the moat was still visible until 1998.

The municipality of Gorleben gained nationwide and international fame through the plans for the establishment of a national nuclear waste repository and the regular nuclear waste transports to the existing aboveground interim storage facility in the forest south of the village, which are regularly subject to strong protests. Here you have a wonderful view of passing inland vessels while driving on the dike or while taking a break.
