The drainage ditch is of enormous importance to Lüneburg, and the weir regulates the water level. During floods, the drainage ditch protects the city center from inundation. The drainage ditch has existed in its current form since 1874, based on the plans of the city architect, Maske.

The weir can also be used to drain the Ilmenau River in Lüneburg to maintain the waterways of the Ratsmühle, Abtsmühle, and Lüner Mühle mills. It's also used to remove trash.
