The Hermitage in the New Garden

Highlight • Monument

The hermitage on Jungfernsee in Potsdam, also known as the Hermitage, was built in 1796 by the master builder Carl Gotthard Langhans and J. G. Brendel on behalf of Friedrich Wilhelm II in the New Garden on the Jungfernsee.
The small wooden pavilion had no windows and was lit only by an opening in the roof. The floor was laid out in white Italian marble, with the center of the room decorated with a world map of marble inlays. The interior was decorated with plaster figures and the ceiling was decorated with figurative depictions of the eight planets.
The hermitage on Jungfernsee was demolished in 1964 because of the construction of the Berlin Wall. However, the interior could be almost completely saved and was stored by the locks management. In 1995, the restoration of the Hermitage began on the preserved pedestal floor.

Shell Grotto on Jungfernsee

Highlight • Structure

The mussel grotto on Jungfernsee is one of the last surviving, independent grotto architectures. The true beauty of the grotto is not recognizable from the outside and quite so wanted. In the past, the shell grotto was magnificently equipped. Today, the interior of the shell grotto resembles a mixture of ruins and construction site, but the remains of the once elaborate decorations still hint at the former beauty.

Cecilienhof Palace

Highlight • Castle

The Cecilienhof Palace is located in the 74 hectare New Garden in Potsdam, which is located between the Holy See and the Jungfernsee. The complex was acquired by Friedrich Wilhelm I in 1783 as a summer residence. Kaiser Wilhelm II had the palace built between 1913 and 1916 in the style of an English country house. The building, which has 176 rooms, cost eight million gold marks and served as the residence of the Crown Prince of Hohenzollern. The castle was named after the crown princess.

The palace acquired its historic dimensions when the Potsdam Agreement was signed in August 1945. The agreement between the four victorious powers of World War II (the Soviet Union, the USA, Great Britain and France) included the division of Germany into four parts and its central government by the Allied Control Council. Visitors can find out more about the Potsdam Conference in an exhibition in the rooms of the palace.

Dutch Establishment in the New Garden

Highlight • Historical Site

Not to be confused with the Dutch Quarter, the Dutch Establishment, a Dutch-style collection of houses built between 1789 and 1790 to plans by Carl Gotthard Langhans, can be found in the Neuer Garten in Potsdam. The houses are inhabited, so the residents enjoy some privacy and does not look too closely into the windows.

Holy Lake

Highlight • Lake

The Holy Lake and the New Garden - it is this connection between parks and water areas that makes this area so appealing. In addition, there are always the lines of sight to the Marble Palace, Cecilienhof Palace and over the narrow headland to the Havel (Jungfernsee). For me one of the most beautiful corners of the Potsdam cultural landscape.
