Münchberg Station

Highlight • Rest Area

The station was put into operation in 1848 with the opening of the Neuenmarkt-Hof section of the Ludwig-Süd-Nord-Bahn. The first draft of a station building from 1844 could not be realized as a result of a financial crisis in mid-1846 that was not just limited to Bavaria. Only a smaller, 29 meter long building with a loading hall and scales was built in the "ancient Roman style" desired by King Ludwig I. On August 19, 1885, ground was broken for the Münchberg–Helmbrechts local railway, which was opened to traffic on June 1, 1887. At that time, Helmbrechts had a flourishing textile industry. As early as the 1870s, the track systems proved to be inadequate for the volume of freight traffic. However, it took until about 1893 before a fundamental reconstruction of the station brought relief.
Due to the construction and expansion of the Hochstadt-Marktzeuln-Probstzella railway line and the closure of the gap between Ludwigsstadt and Probstzella, Münchberg station lost part of its long-distance passenger traffic in the early 20th century. Today, the Intercity-Express trains from Munich to Berlin only run over the new Ebensfeld-Erfurt line, and occasionally over the Franconian Forest Railway.
At the moment there are regional express trains operated by Deutsche Bahn and regional trains operated by the Agilis company.

Highlight • Structure

From here it is only a short walk to the spring. The path to the spring is quite a challenge. You can either take the gravel forest path straight ahead or the forest path that runs parallel for about 150 meters. However, this is a bit impassable in places and riddled with roots, so pushing your bike is recommended here.
