Peter Joseph Lenné began planning the large palace park on the Feldafing shore. His student Karl Effner took over the execution. The Feldafing Park was completed as early as 1857, whereas the construction of the palace progressed only slowly. When King Maximilian II died unexpectedly in 1864, only the foundations were in place. His successor Ludwig II had no interest in the palace and had the foundations removed again. Over the decades, the garden, designed in the style of an English landscape park, increasingly lost its characteristic structure due to the unhindered spread of so-called natural woody growth. It was not until between 1994 and 2004 that it was restored to the condition designed by Lenné, thanks to a new maintenance concept of the Bavarian Administration of Palaces, Gardens and Lakes.
