Seebach Waterfalls

Highlight • Waterfall

The Seebach finally flows over three small waterfalls into the Main-Danube Canal. The three stages give a nice picture. Over the bridge you not only have a view from above of the three steps, but you can get to the canal without getting your feet wet

The Erlangen lock is an economy lock with a lock chamber and three economy basins, which are arranged in a staircase to the west of the chamber. The lock chamber is 190m long and 12m wide. The U-shaped frame of the chamber was built in solid construction and consists of individual blocks separated by joints. Water entered through these joints after only a short period of operation of the lock and severely damaged the structure. For this reason, the new lock is planned to be largely seamless.

The three water tanks of the lock are each 160m long and 15.3m wide. They are connected to the lock chamber via the machine house. If all three water-saving basins are in operation, the water saving is 60 percent. The lowest basin is currently out of service in order to relieve the chamber wall of the damaged existing lock, so that only around 40 percent of water is saved.

Möhrendorf Pillar of Martyrdom

Highlight • Monument

It is very likely that the column of torture was erected on this site at the beginning of the 16th century. However, minor relocations were made because of the road construction. Unfortunately, it has been so badly weathered over the course of almost 500 years that the images are only faintly recognizable.

Patroness of this Catholic church in Möhrendorf:

Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia was born in 1207 as the daughter of the Hungarian King Andreas II. Promised to the son of the Thuringian Landgrave, she came to his court as a four-year-old girl. At 14 she was married and had children Hermann, Sophie and Gertrud. Her happy marriage to Ludwig was short-lived, and he died on a cruise in 1227.

Elisabeth did not see her life as her property, but as a gift from God and put herself fully at his service. As Landgravine, she distributed her goods to the poor and sick. She was then rejected by the Thuringian nobles and lived in dire need in Eisenach. Nevertheless, she did not give up on humility and charity and became ever more closely attached to Christ. In Marburg she built the Franciscan Hospital, where she completely consumed her weakened vitality in self-sacrificing acts of love and renunciation in the service of the sick and lepers. She died at the age of 24 on the night of November 17, 1231. Pope Gregory IX declared her a saint in 1235.
