Gran Pèlag of Vilobí del Penedès

Highlight • Lake

The "pelags" -also called the talls- appeared as a result of the gypsum extractive activity that dates back to Roman times and that has been typical of Vilobí until 1993. Since the extraction of stone, a natural space made up of four lagoons. The concentration of runoff water has originated its characteristic crescent shape and the particular ecosystem that has developed in the environment. It has different very interesting and very peculiar landscapes such as the quarries themselves, and very peculiar fauna and flora. This microecosystem formed by the "pelags" of Vilobí contrasts strongly with the wine-growing landscape of the Alt Penedès region.

Highlight • Religious Site

Between 1981 and 1977 the cloister was restored, recovering its original appearance, and in a second phase, between 2000 and 2002, the bell tower was restored. A third restoration between 2010 and 2011 protected the cloister with a new cover.

Crossing over the Foix River

Highlight • Bridge

This pass is simply a cement platform on which the River Foix runs, with very little flow. Normally it can be passed without too much trouble, as there are only a few centimeters of water on the platform. If there has been abundant rain, it is possible that the passage is complicated.

Castellet Castle

Highlight • Castle

Castellet Castle dates from the 10th century, originally little more than a large fortified house with a watchtower, it was intended to protect the Hispanic March of al-Andalus.

Over time and the successive occupants it did not fall into disuse thanks to its strategic position between Garraf and Penedès. Today it is a tourist attraction, thanks to its state of conservation and its privileged location on the meander of the Foix River, today occupied by the Foix reservoir. There is a terrace bar, very popular with bikers and cyclists, just off the road.
