New Monastery of the Philosopher

Highlight • Religious Site

The monastery is the “new building” (but also several hundred years old) of the old monastery 400 m further down the valley (worth seeing!).
During the Revolutionary War it played an important role as a hiding place. The Ottomans gouged out the eyes of many images in the chapel in revenge.

The Lousios River flows through a stunning gorge, stretching from Karytaina to Dimitsana. With rapid waters and a narrow, forested gorge, it's great for hiking.

The river holds mythological importance, believed to be where Zeus washed after his birth, and was considered the coldest river in the world by Pausanias. This gorge is often called the "Mount Athos of the Peloponnese" due to the many monasteries along its walls, like Timiou Prodromou, Philosophou, Aimyalon and Panagias Kalamiou. It also boasts ancient water-mills for tobacco and gunpowder production, and at its southern end, you'll find the ancient city of Gortys.

Prodromou Monastery

Highlight • Religious Site

The monks' cells (and guest accommodation) cling to the rock like swallows' nests and are supported from below with sticks - adventurous and spectacular. The monastery has lunchtime rest from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and the legs must be covered, but for women not by trousers but by a skirt. You can borrow these at the entrance.
Besides, I wouldn't think it's such a tragedy to be here during closing times. It's more worth seeing from the outside anyway

Pleasant quiet place, even if there isn't so much to see here anymore. At the bridge you can descend to the Lousios river and refresh yourself

A scenic, scenic tour with two monasteries worth seeing along the way. This hike follows steep paths (mostly switchbacks), ascending and descending along the densely wooded Lousios Gorge.

Our tour begins over an old stone arch bridge over the Lousios River, close to the ancient cult site of Gortys (visited the day before). Shortly afterward, we pass the Chapel of …

Today at about 34° dared a hike through the Lousios Gorge to the monastery of Timiou Prodromou. It wasn't my best idea🥵.
But the way was worth seeing. But the journey from Nafplio is anything but short.
