La Hoya de la Mora is the highest point that can be reached by vehicle to climb the Veleta peak. In this place, there is a large parking lot and a bus stop.

In winter, you can't go any further here because the ski slope crosses the road and from here on the road is no longer cleared.

Pico Veleta viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

Pico del Veleta ("Weather vane") is the third highest peak of the Iberian peninsula and the second highest in the Sierra Nevada. Its height is given variously between 3,394 metres (11,135 ft) and 3,398 metres (11,148 ft).The mountain can be seen from the city of Granada. Veleta's northern slopes are home to the Sierra Nevada Ski Station. The access road to approximately 10 metres below the summit is the highest paved road in Europe. This road across the mountains from Granada to the western Alpujarras was built before the creation of the Sierra Nevada National Park in 1999. It has since been closed to general traffic beyond Hoya de la Mora, just above the ski station. However, the road is still used by ski station employees, national park rangers, observatory staff, cyclists and walkers, and a microbus service also takes hikers up to Posiciones del Veleta, a viewpoint 3,100 metres above sea level.

Monument to the Virgin of the Snows

Highlight • Religious Site

The sanctuary of the Virgen de las Nieves is a hermitage located 2700 meters above sea level, in Sierra Nevada. It was built at the end of the 18th century, along with more sanctuaries and hermitages. The sanctuary of the Virgen de las Nieves is the only one that is preserved today.

The turnoff itself, in my opinion, isn't a highlight, but it's a very important junction for planning. The northwestern route is a secondary road closed to car traffic, so you can ride quite relaxed and "alone" with other cyclists and the occasional hiker. The southeastern route is the main road, where all the car traffic heads into the tourist area. I would definitely avoid the main road (there are lots of aggressive tourists who pass you quickly and closely). The exit on the main road is better if you want to go very fast.

Pradollano junction

Highlight • Mountain Pass

If you biked up to this point from Granada you've climbed more than 1400 meters of unrelenting elevation change. It's still another 1100 meters to the summit from here, but in winter this is as far as the road is usually kept open from snow. Depending on conditions you can usually continue straight on this short spur leading into the resort area for a break and to warm up/dress up more layers before shooting down this long sweet descent. In summer the pavement continues up about half of the distance to the summit from here, the rest is gravel/dirt that road bike tires might not work well with, but definitively worth every effort to take in the breathtaking views.
