La Guardia

Highlight • Settlement

La Guardia is considered a small town, but surprisingly rich in heritage, ideal for a peaceful getaway from Madrid or Toledo. Its hilltop location affords panoramic views, streets steeped in history, and a distinctive character. Although it seems like a town you could visit in a morning, it holds more history, architecture, and scenery than meets the eye.

Furthermore, it's part of a renowned wine-producing region: within its boundaries lies the Pago Campo de La Guardia vineyard, a wine with a protected designation of origin, adding value for wine tourism enthusiasts.

This is a huge 18th century mansion. The building was built in 1777, the year that appears in an inscription located in the upper right corner of the main door. This typical Manchegan mansion served as quarters for the horses stationed on the roads for the postal service or for other people. Later it served as barracks for the Civil Guard, as rental housing, as workshops for the Tembleque Workshop School and as a meeting place for the different local associations. The main door and the façade around it are in relatively good condition, but the side roofs have collapsed and the whole complex is in danger of collapsing. The interior cannot be accessed.
