The development of the city dates back mainly to the nineteenth century, when Jan Rainer expanded the settlement with sanatorium buildings: Flora (in 1839), the Swiss House and Bellevue (1850) and others. The town also lost some of its charm on November 19, 2004, due to a hurricane that almost completely destroyed the surrounding forests (area of at least 14,000 hectares). The Slovaks were removing the damage for as long as 2 years. Due to the radical change of the landscape, a permit was issued for the expansion of the already existing, wide ski network.
