Avington Park is a historic country estate with rich history that dates back to the 10th century, with the current manor house being constructed in the late 17th century.

The estate has been owned by several prominent families throughout the centuries, and it remains a privately-owned property.

It's also famous for its serene lake, situated close to the manor house and Avington Park Lane which is part of National Cycle Network route 23.

Avington House and Park

Granted to Edmund Clerk by Henry VIII in the 1500s, Avington Park stretches across 150 acres (60 ha) of manicured parkland in the Itchen Valley.

Avington House, which stands at its centre, was built in the late 16th-century by John Clerk and is a Grade I listed building. Today, it's privately owned and hosts wedding, corporate hire and luxury stays.

Avington Park Mansion

Avington Park is a grand, 16th-century house that lies in stunning parkland. The Grade I-listed mansion underwent significant renovation and construction in the 17th century and again in the 18th century. In 1847, it was bought by the brother of the poet, Percey Bysshe Shelley.

Still privately owned, Avington is opened occasionally to the public and is also a wedding and conference venue.

Itchen Abbas Mill Channel

Saint JOHN BAPTIST, to whom this church in Itchen-Abbas is dedicated, is a person on the threshold of the Old and New Testaments (just like the Holy Family with Mary and Joseph). His parents are Zacharias and Elizabeth. After the announcement of the Incarnation of God through them, the Mother of God visits her relative Elizabeth, who will give birth to a son in old age, namely John the Baptist. He is half a year older than Jesus and is considered his forerunner/pioneer. He lives in the desert, preaches repentance from sins to the Jewish population and baptizes them in the Jordan. Jesus also comes there to be baptized, and is filled with the Holy Spirit who descends upon him from heaven.
The feast day of Saint John Baptist in the calendar of saints is June 24th, exactly half a year before 'Christmas Eve'.
