Mam Tor — Abandoned Road

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

This was once the main road into Castleton which was built up onto the side of Mam Tor. Unfortunately due to the local geology the road began to subside almost as soon as it was built. Repeated shorings up didn't help, and eventually the road was abandoned in 1976. It presents an almost unique challenge for bikers in the UK; it really feels like you're navigating a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Until you spy the ice cream van at the top, at any rate.

View of Hope Valley

Highlight • Natural Monument

Make sure you look up when riding, the climbs are tough in this part of the world but be sure to enjoy the views.

Rushup Edge

Highlight (Segment) • Summit

The only way is up! Great when dry, a bit of a slog when wet. The terrain is mixed, with some recent maintenance on the shared-use path at the start. This soon gives way as the trail forks, then flattens out into a rutted section across the top of Rushup Edge. More stunning views open up down the valley.

Cave Dale Descent

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

A famously challenging Peak District descent. Extremely spicy when wet, I'd give it 4 chillies. The bad news is that it's ALWAYS wet haha. It's fairly steep in places, wide for the most part and narrow in others. Scattered with a mixture of loose and embedded rock. In the wider parts of the trail line choice is pretty fun and challenging with the wide variety of choice. Very good fun, scream if you want to go faster kind of descent.

Pindale Road

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

An alternative route into Castleton. Avoid the traffic and take in the views and steady climbs on this quiet little lane.

Cave dale is probably best avoided, its just a swap for the majority , with far to many walkers
