Horncastle Town Centre

Highlight • Historical Site

Horncastle is a quintessentially-English market town in the Lincolnshire Wolds. Nestled between the River Bain and River Waring, the town has a wonderful selection of antique shops, galleries, cafes, restaurants, pubs, artisan shops and places to stay. As such, it is a great place to stop for a pit-stop or an overnight stay on hikes in the area. Be sure to check out St Mary’s Church near the marketplace, which dates to the 13th century.

This trail follows the original path of the railway that linked the historic market town of Horncastle on the edge of the Wolds and Victorian resort of Woodhall Spa to the main line at Kirkstead. The line opened in 1855 with passenger trains stopping in 1952, with the line finally closing in 1971.

Today the line is now a traffic free Spa Trail. Along the trail you will find interesting sculptures accompanied with stories about the line and its history.
