View of Malltraeth Cob and the estuary

Highlight • Structure

Malltraeth Cob
Malltraeth is the next village along from Newborough to the north. The two villages are linked by a “cob” – a dike wall – with a footpath/cycle track along its top.
The cob was completed in the early 19th Century, under the direction of Thomas Telford and John Rennie. At the same time, the Afon Cefni was straightened (and straitened) creating what looks like a canal, but is still tidal. This created nearly 1,600ha of grazing land on either side of the Cefni. Much of this land is now a nature reserve managed by the RSPB.

Also you will see Llyn Parc Mawr Community Woodland where they have picnic areas where you can enjoyed the red squirrels. It is off road but I used my gatorskins and it was fine.

The Cob (about a mile in length) is an elevated tarmac footpath/cycle trail which runs parallel to the road but about 150 feet (50 m) from it.

It provides excellent views across the Cefni estuary and the distant mountains of Snowdonia and also leads to Newborough Forest where there are circular cycle trails leading directly to the beach (which can get very busy). If you are thinking of riding any of the trails in Newborough Forest I would recommend at least a hybrid bike as they can become rough in places.

Tŵr Mawr Lighthouse

Highlight • Monument

Built in 1873, this gorgeous lighthouse no longer shines but it's still a magnificent find when you're walking in the area. Painted bright white, it shares its tapered architecture with Anglesey windmills, and has a conical roof. The lighthouse guards the outer entrance to the Menai Strait, sitting at the southern tip of Llanddwyn Island.

Standing on the beach here, you can look across Caernarfon Bay to the peaks of Snowdonia in the distance. As the crow flies, you're only 15 miles (24 km) from the summit of Snowdon, so it's no wonder that you can see the National Park's stunning topography so clearly. The beach here is sandy and protected from westerly swells, so it's a lovely place for a paddle.
