West Bay Cliffs

Highlight • Natural Monument

The coast path between West Bay and Burton Bradstock is currently closed due to a landslip. A diversion is in place using the public footpath across Bridport and West Dorset Golf Club. Please see the South West Coast Path website for further info and a map of the diversion.

West Bay Harbour

Highlight • Settlement

Part of the Jurassic Coast in Dorset, West Bay is a beautiful harbour settlement. Originally designed as a commercial harbour for nearly Bridport to export fishing nets, West Bay declined in importance with the advent of the railways. Not a natural harbour and exposed to the south, over the centuries many attempts have been made to prevent it from silting up and to repair storm damage.

Today, West Bay is a thriving fishing harbour popular with tourists. With a wonderful beach and impressive cliffs, it's well worth visiting. It should be noted that it's part of an eroding landscape and cliff falls have occurred in recent years so always respect warnings and signage.

Seatown Beach

Highlight • Beach

As you continue along the route south of Chideock, with the road dropping to the coast as you look for the bridleway east that will guide you up to Doghouse Hill, why not carry on down the hill to the beach for a little R&R? There are plenty of opportunities for refreshments down here, as well as the chance to cool off on the shore while taking in the splendour of the Jurassic Coast.

Great path with amazing views in every direction. You can see right down to towards Lyme Regis bay, or to the east towards Golden Cap, sticking out of the headland. Look out for the fissure next to the path as well.

A fine example of some of the bountiful and rare wildflowers that grow in this region. The wildflower meadows are alive with all kinds of wildlife who call the Golden Cap estate home.

The views across Lyme Bay towards the beautiful town of Lyme Regis are simply exceptional. In clear weather, you can see for miles around the coastline.

The erosion along this section of the coast is evident and the slumped cliffs have been blanketed in scrub plants, adding to the wonder.

Golden Cap Summit

Highlight • Summit

Standing at 626 feet (191 m), Golden Cap is the highest point on the South Coast. From the cliff, you are afforded utterly breathtaking views over Lyme Bay to Dartmoor and ahead to the Isle of Portland.

The Fisherman's Rest

Highlight • Pub

Lovely pub with great food and outdoor seating right by the beach. Located in Seatown, it's a perfect spot to relax and refuel after a run along the Jurassic Coast. Golden Cap - the highest point on the south coast of England - rises just behind the pub and makes and enjoyable climb, with great views from the summit. There's also a good campsite - Golden Cap Holiday Park - just across the road from the pub.
