Borghetto on the Mincio

Highlight • Settlement

Borghetto is a town in the province of Verona which stands on a ford of the river Mincio. In medieval times it was used as a toll booth. Thanks to the Visconti (dukes of Milan) the village acquired importance and a defensive wall was built around the town. The Duke of Milan, in a dispute with the Gonzagas in Mantua, decided to build a dam to divert the Mincio river and finally dry up the lakes around Mantua. The project failed and a wooden bridge over the Mincio was built instead.

Volta Mantovana

Highlight • Settlement

Town of the high Mantovano at the beginning of the Morainic Hills.
Interesting is the visit to Palazzo Guerrieri Gonzaga, built by the marquises of Mantua Ludovico Gonzaga and Barbara of Brandenburg as a country villa, in the mid-1400s.
