River Don Estuary

Highlight • River

The Don rises in the peat flat beneath Druim na Feithe, and in the shadow of Glen Avon, before flowing quietly past the ice-age moraine and down to Cock Bridge, below the picturesque site of the recently demolished Delnadamph Lodge. Several streams, the Dhiver, Feith Bhait, Meoir Veannaich, Cock Burn and the Allt nan Aighean merge to form the embryonic Don. Water from the north of Brown Cow Hill (grid reference NJ230045) drains into the Don, while water from the west side runs into the River Spey and that from the south side into the Dee. The Don follows a circuitous route eastwards past Corgarff Castle, through Strathdon and the Howe of Alford before entering the North Sea just north of Old Aberdeen.

The old bridge was once used for traffic but is now pedestrians only. It's an interesting way to cross the Dee. There is a route that can be taken south of the river along to the other bridge to make a circuit.

Flagpole Mound, Duthie Park

Highlight • Monument

Duthie Park is a fabulous park located close to the city centre, which is popular with locals and visitors alike. The 44 acre site was donated to the city by Miss Elizabeth Duthie in 1880 and opened as a park in 1883. It is recognised as one of the best purposely designed parks in Scotland.

Duthie Park

Highlight • Rest Area

The park is a great place for a run, both as a destination or as a training ground. There are several paths here and you can spend your entire run here. Also the Deeside railway line ends here, and it is just by the river, allowing it to be used as a destination when running along either of these other routes.

Aberdeen Beachfront Esplanade

Highlight • Viewpoint

The esplanade runs along the length of Aberdeen beach, and when the tide is in, the beach path can be used for running, away from the road and traffic. Running from Fittie to the end and back is about 4k.
