Here the Nahe flows into the Rhine after 125 kilometers. From the bridge you can say goodbye to the river that you have followed for so long on the bike path. At the same time, you can enjoy the beautiful view that offers you here: the view of the Mouse Tower, Ehrenfels Castle and the shipping traffic on the Rhine is absolutely worth seeing.

Drusus Bridge - Nahe/Stone Bridge (ca. 1772) - Bingen 🚴‍♂️

The Drusus Bridge crosses the Nahe River near Bingen am Rhein. Built in the 11th century, it is the oldest medieval stone bridge in Germany. It rests on seven bridge piers; it is 126 meters long in total, with the individual spans varying from approximately 12.5 meters (outer spans) to almost 15 meters (central span).
It is a stone bridge with seven piers. The current basic structure dates back to the 11th century. A small Romanesque bridge chapel is set in an underground cavity east of the first bridge pier on the right bank of the Nahe. Above the slate rock are three cavities in front of the first pier. Today, Stefan-George-Straße and Saarlandstraße cross over it. The hollow space directly adjacent to the pillar was expanded with a groin vault, a window, and an east-facing apse. Because the bridge was widened during reconstruction in 1951/1952, the window of the chapel had to be walled up.
The name of the bridge is derived from the Roman general Drusus. However, the present bridge bears no connection to the Roman bridge, which was located slightly downstream, approximately at the level of the basilica. Based on the remains of bridge piles, the year of construction was determined to be 77. A new stone bridge was probably built in the middle of the 11th century. It was destroyed by French troops in 1689 during the War of the Palatinate Succession and rebuilt in 1772. During the construction of the railway, the seventh pillar on the left side was removed. The last destruction occurred in March 1945 by German troops retreating from enemy forces. During reconstruction in 1951/52, the bridge was widened by three meters and renovated again in 2005/2006.
