Brunnwasser Spring

Brunnwasser, Brunnenwasser or Le Brunnwasser is the name of a slow-flowing stream in the Rhine meadows near Rhinau in Grand Ried, a region of exceptional natural wealth in central Alsace. The Brunnwasser is a body of water fed by groundwater, which begins near Rhinau and runs through Daubensand to Gerstheim. The water flows in a northerly direction over a length of around 8 kilometers through alluvial forests, meadows and fields. Various leisure activities, kayakers, anglers and hunters share this body of water, which has ecologically valuable flora and fauna. Because of the very sensitive biological diversity, it is important to protect the water and to take care of the animals and plants. Nature here is characterized by a diverse flora and fauna, including alluvial forest, reeds, nests and spawning grounds for fish. Animal species such as birds or fish use the reeds for nesting, for reproduction or to protect themselves from predators. To protect these species, it is important not to trespass on the reeds. Horsts are a plant growth form between 40 and 60 cm high, which is particularly found in such wet areas. Many species of birds find refuge and nesting sites there. Canoeists should always avoid horsts on the water in a large area. Fish need spawning grounds to reproduce. These are usually found in shallow watercourses or in aquatic plant beds. In well water it is therefore very important to avoid ground contact in these areas.
