Dörplinger Light Railway Cutting

Highlight • Historical Site

A 40 m high ridge stood in the way of the planned railway line, which could not be bypassed. So you had to dig the route through the geest. In retrospect, this led to some landslides and large snow drifts in winter, so that trains derailed again and again.

Today the old railway line is a beautiful, natural ravine.

a very well-kept place with a covered break opportunity. The unusual construction, which consists of four huge wooden poles on which a grass-covered roof rests, is modeled on a former harvest storage facility. This construction was called "Four Rod Mountains". The roof was movable in the original.
Mayor Volker Lorenzen told me that if you want to spend the night here, you should first obtain the consent of the municipality of Dörpling.

Kreisbahn Locomotive Shed (1905)

Highlight • Historical Site

A small train connected Pahlen and many other places on the Eider with the town of Heide via a circular route. The railway was built from 1905, but by 1930 many passengers preferred to use the faster buses. The railway line was shut down again in 1937.

At the locomotive shed there are some information boards and historical photos.

Old Harbor of Pahlhude

Highlight • Historical Site

Between 1840 and 1910, Pahlhude was the largest port on the west coast of Holstein. With the construction of the Kiel Canal, however, shipping on the Eider almost came to a standstill.

The fishermen of the Eider sold their catch as far away as Hamburg and Bremen. Sturgeons were particularly sought after, as they could secure a whole year's income if they were of the right size. When the Eider dam was built in 1937, the sturgeon could no longer get into the Eider and fishing also came to a standstill.

Other information boards also provide information about the brickworks located here and the life of the brickmaker families. At the harbor there are a few places to rest directly on the Eider.
