The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Nikolaus, popularly known as the Artländer Dom, is the landmark of Ankum, an old market town where once mainly cloth was traded. The church consecrated to St. Nicholas is on the Vogelberg, high above the market arches.

The church was founded around 1180 as a private church of Count Simon von Tecklenburg. The Romanesque west tower is slightly inclined to the nave. It has a barrel vault and consists of granite boulders and sandstone fragments. The tower of a predecessor building, the church itself was built in the second half of the 13th century as a hall building with two-bay nave and a recently closed chancel in the Gothic style. Windows and doors are pointed arched, inside is ribbed vault.
In 1901 the church was extended by Alexander Behnes in the neo-Gothic style, whereby the former choir yoke forms the eastern yoke of a now three-bay longhouse. In original form are still preserved the western yoke and the tower.
The late Romanesque baptismal font is from Bentheim sandstone and dates back to the 13th century. The majority of the equipment is neo-Gothic from the period around 1900.
