Poggio Salamartano Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Poggio Salamartano viewpoint in Fucecchio is a historical and panoramic point of interest. It is located on a hill where the castle of Salamarzana once stood, which belonged to the Cadolingi counts. This point offers a splendid view of the Tuscan landscapes, ranging from the plain of the lower Valdarno to the hills of Cerbaie, and from Monte Serra to the Apuan Alps. One of the main attractions in Fucecchio is the Collegiata di San Giovanni Battista, an 11th-century church rebuilt in the 18th century in neoclassical style. Another notable place is the Abbey of San Salvatore, founded in 1001, which houses a painting by Jacopo Chimenti.

Located on the Via Francigena, it houses a hospice for pilgrims.
The Medici Bridge of Cappiano on the Usciana canal, emissary of the Fucecchio Marshes, had in the past an important role in the internal navigation system, allowing, until the nineteenth-century reclamations, commercial relations in the stretch between Pistoia and Pisa.

Its current form dates back to the first half of the sixteenth century when Cosimo I de' Medici decided to rebuild it, as documented by the marble epigraphs affixed to its brick structures. The open and covered bridges and the various annexed buildings date back to that period: the inn, the ironworks, the mill and the house of the administrator of the farm.
However, there was already news of this bridge in the Middle Ages, managed by the Hospitallers of Altopascio and included in the Via Francigena itinerary. In 1325, during a conflict between Florence and Lucca, it was destroyed. It was subsequently rebuilt and equipped with a tower and drawbridges, a lock to regulate the flow of water and eel fishing. There was also a mill and a water-powered saw for cutting wood. See: viamedicea.it/it/lungo-il-cammino/ponte-mediceo-di-cappiano

March 23, 2024,Tag 21: Galleno - San Miniato
Today a rather short stage across the valley of the Arno, the river that flows further up through Florence and further down through Pisa.
After the start, however, we first went slightly up and down through a beautiful, wild forest area and now, shortly before the finish in San Miniato, then back up a hill or through an area that …

Early birds were already out at 5:00 a.m. I was awake and went downstairs to say goodbye to the two Korean women. I imagine myself on a pilgrimage in Korea and having to search for accommodation and food in rural villages. That's probably how they feel.
In return for a few updates …

Today was a fantastic day of hiking. Along the canal through tall grass with all the spring flowers. The ground was clayey, muddy from the rain. And a wonderful landscape. Tuscany has a lot to offer.
My hotel landlady took me back to the starting point this morning. I would like to thank VERONIKA for that.
The path to San …
