It is one of the largest necropolises in Alsace (37 tumuli). Classified as a Historic Monument since 1987, they are among the very last witnesses of the Celtic occupation of the region, in the first Iron Age (750 to 450 BC). The largest are at the water's edge: 30 centimeters to 1.80 meters high and 10 to 30 meters in diameter. Walk around and try to spot them, not all are easy to see. With children, it's a walk and a discovery conducive to the development of their imagination and learning.
Excavations took place in 1979 and 1983 in the southern group made up of 21 recognized tumuli. This excavation, carried out by Messrs. Plouin and Lambach, focused on a large mound 18 m in diameter and 75 cm high. It contained three burials grouped together in the central area. The first is that of a woman buried with three pieces of pottery. His grave was remodeled shortly after the burial. The second is that of a young adult accompanied by four ceramics. The third is that of an adult accompanied by a child aged six to eight. The funerary furniture is poor and of poor quality. The method of burial is that practiced during the Early Iron Age and the pottery from the first grave suggests the Late Bronze Age. The constant humidity of the soil allowed the preservation of a wooden palisade. This forms, around the three tombs, an almost circular enclosure 5.50 m in diameter. The palisade is made up of 74 oak stakes placed in a ditch 20 cm wide and 40 cm deep. The piles, of triangular section, were arranged in a very regular manner alternately back to back and tip to tip. Great care was taken in the construction of this palisade. This type of palisade was suspected in several Hallstattian tumuli by the existence of such ditches and by post holes. That of Mussig is the first to have been found in place. The palisade was dated by dendrochronology (on 17 piles) to 707 BC. B.C.
