Black Lake

Highlight • Lake

The Black Lake was created in the late Middle Ages by a landslide from the Spiegelstein. The natural scar of the Verunite Schrofen, which is still visible today, bears witness to this major medieval event.

The surface of the water is roughly in the shape of a boomerang, with a small island on the south side of the lake with a single tree on it. There is a small footpath around the lake.

Wassertor Feldkirch

Highlight • Historical Site

The old Montforters used the narrow valley between the Rhine Valley and the Walgau to collect customs duties from traders and other travelers ... this was also the purpose of the gates ...

Churer Gate

Highlight • Monument

Churer Tor, Feldkirch
Built before 1270, the Churer Tor was completely renewed in the course of the re-fortification of the city in 1491. A Vorwerk in front of the six-storey gate tower, built in 1591, was removed when the city ditches were leveled after 1826. The Churer Tor is the only remaining tower-like city gate in Vorarlberg today.
In the past, the Churer Tor was also called the Hewers and Salztor. The name Salztor, used after 1615, comes from the neighboring salt barn where salt from Hall was stored and which was demolished in 1905. The official apartment of the salt janitor was also located in the Churer Tor, while the gatekeeper himself lived in a small house nearby.
The important trade route to Chur once led through this gate over the Heiligkreuzbrücke, the only crossing over the Ill in Feldkirch.
