Oegstgeest Town Hall

Highlight • Historical Site

The property, named "RHIJNGEEST", was built in 1901 in chalet style with Jugendstil influences.

It was inaugurated in 1903 as Rhijngeest sanatorium, nicknamed "sanatorium for nerve leaders".
The proposal to build this clinic came from Professor Gerbrandus Jelgersma, the first professor of psychiatry in Leiden.
In 1949 it was renamed Jelgersmakliniek, popularly known as “De Jel”.

On Saturday 5 June 1999 it was officially opened as the town hall of Oegstgeest.
The building has the status of a national monument.

The Dragon Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The bridge is so named because four wrought iron dragons from the 19th century adorn the railings of the bridge.

However, the bridge is also called “The Swan Bridge” or “The Snake Bridge”.

A photo from the beginning of the 20th century shows that the dragons are still standing on the bridge and have a seat on their wings.

In 1931, the dragon benches were placed in the middle of the bridge and facing each other.

For unclear reasons, the fencing including dragons was removed in the sixties.

In 2001, they were brought out again and the fencing with the animals was incorporated into the railings of a small bridge on the estate.
It is not entirely certain whether the dragons have been placed back on the same bridge from the past.

“The Dragon Bridge” is included as Oegstgeest heritage.

Leidse Hout

Highlight • Forest

The Leidse Hout was opened on 30 June 1931. It was built as a job creation project.

The city park with its many bridges is mainly planted with typical Dutch trees and plants. There are still many oaks, ash, beeches and alders in the park. There are also more than 140 types of mushrooms growing there.

The park includes a tea house, deer park, playground and music pavilion.
There is a large playing field on the north side.
The free pop festival “Werfpop” takes place here every year (normally).
