Ball Band

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

The ball band is an exposed band in a vertical rock wall that must be crossed. There are some climbing spots up to 2 in it. You have to be absolutely sure-footed, concentrated and free from giddiness. There is always an acute risk of falling.
The Irish botanist Sir John Ball ascended towards the summit with a chamois hunter on September 19, 1857. But the chamois hunter refused the "ball tape" and so John Ball climbed alone over the tape and the Pelmo Glacier, which was still there at the time, to the summit. In addition to the rope, Sir John Ball usually had an umbrella with him on his tours (which he might also be able to use in the three gorges of the Ball Band, as there is usually some water running down from the remains of snow above).
