The Schönenbodensee is located to the east of the village of Wildhaus in the municipality of Wildhaus-Alt St. Johann in a hollow in a protected low moor area at the southern foot of the Gulmen. Like the Schwendisee on the opposite side of the village, the lake was formed around 14,000 years ago after a glacier melted. In the following millennia, the moors gradually developed as a result of the silting up of the lake shores.
On the one hand, the lake is fed by a small stream that flows into the lake on the east side, on the other hand, mostly underground meltwater and rainwater penetrate through the limestone layers of the Gulmen into the lake. As a result, the moor water is constantly refreshed.
The small stream Simmi leaves the Schönenbodensee in the west, turns east and flows into the Werdenberger Binnenkanal east of Gams.
You can swim in the Schönenbodensee: since 1930 there has been a supervised bathing establishment with a jetty, catering facilities and pedalo rental. The production costs were 50,000 francs.
