In 1629, after the Siege of 's-Hertogenbosch and the conquest of the city by Frederick Hendrik, the building was confiscated by the States for purposes of national importance. A weapons factory and later a laboratory for scientific research were established there. During the Second World War, the Hieronymus Bosch Statue and the Cardinal van Rossum Statue were stored in the Kruithuis to protect against war violence and German smelting furnaces. In 1947, the city ceded the Mortel Barracks to the government in exchange for renewed control over the Kruithuis.
Between 1946 and 1973, architects were trained in the building for the reconstruction of the three-year Ecclesiastical Architecture Course, from which the Bossche School would develop. Teachers included the brothers Hans and Nico van der Laan. In 1956, Jan de Jong graduated with honors.
From 1972 to 1994, the building housed the Stedelijk Museum 's-Hertogenbosch.

In 1491 a Gothic chapel was built at the end of Hinthamerstraat by order of the Brotherhood of Saint Anthony. During the Iconoclasm of 1566 the chapel was badly damaged and it was only restored in 1609 during the Twelve Years' Truce and this took the full twelve years. During the Siege of 's-Hertogenbosch] the Antonius chapel was again damaged and after the capture of the city the chapel fell further into disrepair, after which it was largely demolished in 1640.
