The Hochalmweg (High Alpine Trail) between Hirschenkogel and Erzkogel runs along a gentle ridge and offers a particularly panoramic passage. Open meadows alternate with sparse forest sections, while magnificent views of the surrounding mountains and valleys repeatedly open up. This section exudes a true alpine atmosphere, making the connection between the two peaks a scenic highlight of the tour.

Erzkogel Summit Cross

Highlight • Summit

If you take the Hochalmweg, this leads directly to the summit cross on the Erzkogel, where there is also a summit book. From the summit cross you can already see the last part of the way to the Sonnwendstein and the Pollereshütte.

And of course you can enjoy an amazing view. The view towards Schneeberg and Rax is unfortunately blocked by the many tall trees directly from the summit. You can already enjoy this panorama sufficiently on the Hochalmweg. If you decide to come via the ridge path, you either have to walk a bit uphill over the cow pasture or you follow the path and then walk a little bit back to the summit cross.

Pollereshütte

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The Pollereshütte is located just before the summit of the Sonnwendstein. It is a very hospitable mountain hut. They have very good coffee and world-class curd cheese strudel with vanilla sauce. Here, too, you can enjoy the beautiful view with a cup of coffee. My dogs were welcome. In summer there are grazing cattle in the vicinity of the hut, which occasionally camps directly on the path. I had enough space to evade, my dogs were good and the cattle seemed very relaxed. I will be happy to come again!

August 3, 2025,Semmering 🇦🇹 — Hirschenkogel, Hochalmweg, Dürriegel, Erzkogel, Sonnwendstein, Weinweg, Parapluieweg, Maria Schutz, Lourdes Grotte
Last Sunday, I started my hike right at Semmering train station. The trail first led me through the town and then steadily uphill to the Hirschenkogel, where I couldn't resist a detour to the observation tower. From there, I enjoyed a magnificent view of the Semmering region before continuing along the panoramic Hochalmweg (along the border between Lower Austria and …
